    Internal Controls Specialist II

    The Internal Control Specialist will act as a coordinator of all operational control reviews and/or health plan regulatory reviews as well as coordinating other external audits, including, but not limited to self insured group audits, and other regulatory or state as needed working with operations, IT, cross-functional teams and external auditors to balance the need for information with corporate confidentiality and privacy guidelines.  They will ensure that information requests are within the scope of the audit, and acts as an advocate for operations and IT.


    Additionally, the will eview internal controls and/or management controls of the areas under audit, including controls applicable to electronic data processing systems and applications.  Analyzes control activities to adequately conclude that the evidence supports the control objective.


    Develop and maintain relationships with key internal customers at varying levels (i.e., staff, line management, executives, etc.) through visibility gained by direct meetings, participation on various corporate committees, and other means.


    Assist external auditors and is alert to possible audit efficiencies which may be achieved as a result of external audit procedures.

    Responsibilities & Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, computer science, or business administration, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Four years of audit, IT or related business experience.
    • CPA, CIA, or CISA preferred.
    • Reviews and facilitates the validation of SOC1, and external audit exceptions.

    • Excellent communicator, ability to prepare clear, concise written memoranda.
    • Strong flowcharting skills using flowcharting software.
    • Willingness to work in a collaborative manner with various business and IT personnel and to facilitate communication between internal and external auditors, operational and IT personnel.
    • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to facilitate cross-functional teams.
    • Outstanding analytical skills, ability to analyze complex business situations, learn quickly, and synthesize corresponding solutions, options, and action plans.
    • Ability to understand complex business and technical controls and then verbally convey that information and any recommendations in lay terms.
    • Ability to organize, plan, prioritize and complete assignments with little supervision and within prescribed time frames.
    • Strong research skills in understanding business and technical processes.
    • Health insurance experience is a plus.
    • Skilled in the use of personal computer software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Lotus Notes, Databases and Web Applications.

    Additional General Functions & Outcomes for an Internal Controls Specialist II

    • Design/coordinate the development and execution of training programs to improve the understanding and quality of SOC1 and/or SOC2 control activities as well as expectations and requirements for external audits.
    • Viewed as a trusted point of contact for business partners within the organization.
    • Responsible for leading external audits with a high degree of independence.
    • Develops and maintains relationships with key internal customers at varying levels, including: departmental staff, members of management, and senior leaders.
    • Attend specialized training to understand and incorporate new requirements into the various external audits as applicable.
    • Leads meetings with external auditors.
